Early in the season...

The Lady Lions actually trailed at halftime, 32-31. They had scored the final six points of the second quarter to close to within one point, then scored the first 15 points of the third quarter to go ahead, 46-32, and cruised the rest of the way.

Howe changed its defense at halftime and the Lady Lions’ depth made a big difference against McCurtain.

The Lady Lions eventually outscored McCurtain, 33-14, in the second half.

Randa Grant kept Howe close in the first half with 13 points and eventually finished with 17. Lynsey White added 15 points with nine of the points in the decisive run. Megan Brown added 11.

The start of the second game looked like it was going to be all McCurtain as the Bulldogs pulled out to a quick lead. But Howe kept the pressure on and after a three-point basket by Jaron Wiggington early in the second quarter, the Lions never trailed again.

Brazil transfer student Marcello Gugliemli entered the game midway through the first quarter and that was when the momentum switched to Howe.

Howe outscored McCurtain, 18-2, in the second quarter to build a halftime lead of 24-12. The Lions did not slow down in the third quarter as they outscored the visitors 45-14 over the middle two quarters.

Wiggington had another big game for Howe, scoring while Gugliemli added 10.

Howe’s boys are now 3-1 on the season. Both Howe teams will be back in action Thursday at Cameron.

The Lions did have a great record, but their opponent in the finals was powerful Red Oak, ranked second in the state in Class B, undefeated going into the game and a defending state champion.

But on this Saturday night, playing before a packed house at the EOSC gym, Howe would not be denied, despite having its two big guys foul out, seeing a last-second game winner in regulation denied because of a questionable call and the brilliance of Red Oak’s spectacular Dwight Camp, who scored 32 points.

The result was a 74-70 win for Howe, a game which showed the Lions are not only back, but a team that must be reckoned with in the upcoming county tournament and the state playoffs.




Playing without big guys Cameron Sanders and Marcello Gugliemli, who had fouled out, the Lions apparently won at the end of regulation but the officials called a walking violation to wipe out the basket.

In overtime, Red Oak took a quick lead at 64-62, but the Lions answered quickly. Jared Brown hit a layup, was fouled and hit the free throw to give Howe a 65-64 lead. On its next possession, Brown drove and passed to Jace Johnson for a basket to give Howe a 67-64 lead.

After Red Oak answered, tournament MVP Jared Wann hit a free throw to put the lead back to two with 1:24 left. Camp missed a three and Brown was fouled and hit both free throws to increase the lead to 70-66 with 40 seconds left.

The Eagles answered again, then made the mistake of fouling Jaron Wiggington, who nailed both free throws for a four-point lead with only 16 seconds left.

After another Red Oak basket to cut the lead to two, Wiggington was fouled with 2.9 seconds left. He was clutch again, hitting both free throws to clinch the win. The Eagles did not score and as the final buzzer sounded, Howe celebrated its huge win.



The Lions were never intimidated by Red Oak. They took it right to the Eagles from the first of the game and continued throughout.

Red Oak rallied in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 57 after trailing by nine early in the fourth quarter. The Lions seemed to finally be struggling, but they bounced back down the stretch. Wann and Brown each hit a pair of free throws to increase the lead to four points.

Camp hit a basket and hit a free throw to cut the score to 61-60 with 24 seconds left. Johnson hit another free throw for a two-point lead, but Camp was fouled and hit both free throws with 8 seconds left to tie the game.

The Lions quickly moved the ball down the court, setting the stage for a potential game-winning shot. The basket was good as the buzzer sounded, setting off a wild celebration that quickly ended as the officials overruled the basket.

That set the stage for the dramatic overtime for Howe.

Wann led the Lions with 20 points. Wiggington had 13 while Jace Johnson scored 11 and Brown 10. Jordan Booth added 14 points for the Eagles and Dustin Knight had 13.

Howe improves to 9-1 overall while Red Oak drops to 10-1. Wiggington was also named to the All-Tournament Team along with Wann.

Ganhar jogos por exemplo sao apenas numeros em tabelas. A real vitoria eh interna ... Nao ha realmente muita graca, quando se ganha, mas sabe que nao foi preciso dar tudo de si. Por outro lado, a derrota nao parece frustrante se voce fez o deu melhor, e fez tudo que estava ao seu alcance.
